Explanations
What is FARMIS?
FARMIS stands for Farmers Advisory Resources & Market Information Service. It is a free mobile service for Papua New Guinea that brings several agricultural tools together in one app.
Who it is for
FARMIS is built for:
- Smallholder farmers growing food and cash crops.
- SMEs trading farm produce or selling inputs.
- Students and researchers working on agriculture in PNG.
- Extension officers advising farmers in the field.
You don't need to be a "tech person" to use it. If you can use SMS and a basic Android app, you can use FARMIS.
What it does
FARMIS bundles several services into one app so you don't have to chase information across the web:
- Crop advisories — recommendations on planting, crop management, pest control, and improving yields.
- Market information — daily market prices and trends across PNG.
- Farm inputs — find and purchase seeds, tools, and supplies.
- Agri forum — ask questions and share tips with other farmers and experts.
- Pest & disease guide — identify problems and learn how to treat them.
- Weather — local forecasts that help you plan your work.
- News — agriculture updates from PNG and the region.
Each of these is also available on its own page in the app, so you can use FARMIS the way that fits your day.
Why a mobile app
Because most farmers in PNG own a phone before they own a computer. The whole product is designed for:
- Lower-end Android devices.
- Patchy mobile data (a lot of content works offline once loaded).
- Two languages — English and Tok Pisin — with more planned.
What FARMIS is not
- It's not a replacement for an agricultural extension officer when the situation is serious.
- It's not a buying contract. Prices in the app are indicative — confirm with the buyer.
- It's not a substitute for official severe-weather warnings — always confirm with official sources for storm or flood decisions.
Cost
FARMIS is free for users in PNG. There is no subscription. Mobile data charges from your network provider still apply when using live features.
