About
Papaya (pawpaw) is a fast-growing tropical fruit tree widely grown in PNG home gardens and for market. It produces fruit year-round in tropical climates and is one of the easiest fruit crops to grow from seed. Green papaya is used as a cooking vegetable, while ripe fruit is eaten fresh.
Health Benefits
Exceptionally rich in vitamin C (one fruit provides over 200% daily needs), vitamin A, folate, and the enzyme papain which aids digestion. Contains antioxidants including lycopene and beta-carotene.
Market Requirements
Ripe fruit should have yellow-orange skin with no bruising or dark spots. Green fruit for cooking should be firm and unblemished. Handle carefully during transport.
