About

Ginger is an important spice and medicinal crop in PNG, grown widely in both highland and lowland areas. PNG ginger is renowned internationally for its strong flavour and aroma. The crop is grown from rhizome pieces and takes 8-10 months to mature. It is both a food crop and an important cash crop with export potential.

Health Benefits

Powerful anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory properties. Contains gingerols and shogaols which aid digestion, reduce pain, and support immune function. Used traditionally for colds, stomach ailments, and pain relief.

Market Requirements

Fresh rhizomes should be firm, plump, and free of mould or soft spots. Skin should be smooth and tight. Export quality requires washing, grading, and specific size standards.
