About
Breadfruit is a traditional staple tree crop in PNG coastal and island communities. The starchy fruit is a major carbohydrate source that can be boiled, roasted, fried, or made into flour. A single mature tree can feed a family and produces for decades. The tree also provides excellent shade, timber, and livestock feed.
Health Benefits
Good source of complex carbohydrates, dietary fibre, potassium, vitamin C, and B vitamins. Higher protein than most root crops. Gluten-free and suitable for those with wheat allergies.
Market Requirements
Fruit should be mature but firm (not overripe/soft). Clean, undamaged skin. Sell fresh within 2-3 days of harvest. Processed (dried or flour) products extend shelf life.
